Jonathan Bernier figures to get the start in net tonight for Toronto as the Maple Leafs look to rebound against the Colorado Avalanche. Watch the Leafs vs. Avalanche live on TSN4 at 9pm et. The Maple Leafs also hope to rebound tonight after losing a 3-2 decision to Arizona on Tuesday. That snapped a three-game winning streak for Toronto and was the clubs first regulation road loss of the season (3-1-1). James Reimer made his second straight start in net, ending with 30 saves. However, he was beaten for a pair of goals in the first period and Toronto trailed by three before getting power-play tallies from Dion Phaneuf and Cody Franson. Terrible start and we just werent able to overcome it, said Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle. It seemed like we were in neutral and they were in third gear. Phil Kessel assisted on both goals, giving him a pair of tallies and six assists over a four-game point streak. He is tied for third in the NHL with 16 points. Bernier has faced the Avalanche just once before as a starter while also making a relief appearance against them. The Maple Leafs picked up their second straight win over the Avalanche with a 3-2 overtime victory at home on Oct. 14. Kessel scored the winner 34 seconds into the extra frame and Reimer finished with 22 saves. Toronto has won three straight in Colorado. Varlamov stopped 37 shots for the Avs in the teams 5-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday night. Stunned in the third period last time out, the Colorado Avalanche hope to rebound on Thursday night and avoid a fourth straight setback as they welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs to Pepsi Center. The Avs hosted the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday and went up 2-0 on first- period goals by John Mitchell and Jamie McGinn, but the Canucks responded with five straight tallies, including four in the third period to hand Colorado a 5-2 loss. Semyon Varlamov stopped the first 26 shots he faced, but ended up with 32 saves while allowing all five Vancouver goals. The loss dropped Colorado to 0-2-1 in its past three games and 3-6-5 on the season. I mean third period we are up a goal and end up losing 5-2. Its unacceptable to say the least, Mitchell said. We have to be better, we have to find a way. They come out and score a goal early, its 2-2. We cant come out and completely fall apart, you know, shut it down. We have to learn to respond and come out and play hard after that. We just didnt do anything and we certainly didnt help Varly. Colorado also lost defenseman Brad Stuart to a hamstring injury in the game and the ailment could sideline him for the next few weeks. Head coach Patrick Roy has opted to rest Varlamov tonight and will give Reto Berra his fourth straight of the campaign and first since Oct. 21. Berra has never before faced Toronto. General manager Jon Daniels said before Mondays season opener that Darvish "appears to be healthy and strong" after consecutive days of throwing over the weekend. Darvish was scheduled to start the opener against Philadelphia until neck stiffness during training camp about two weeks ago. "Very, very encouraged," manager Ron Washington said. "The report I got, it was just as good as it was before he got hurt." The Rangers put Darvish on the disabled list Sunday while setting their 25-man roster, but the move was retroactive to March 21. He would be eligible to return Saturday. Daniels said the Rangers havent committed to when Darvish will return to the rotation. But the GM also said Darvish wouldnt necessarily have to pitch in a rehab game before making his season debut. "I think well probably accomplish a lot of that on the side, extended bullpen so to speak," Daniels said. "Were going to sit down and meet before we lay out a plan." Darvish last faced hitters March 16 in a spring training game. He threw a 32-pitch bullpen session Sunday, a day after throwing off flat ground. He will throw again Tuesday. Darvish finished second in the AL Cy Young Award voting last season when he led the majors with 277 strikkeouts.dddddddddddd. The Rangers are also without left-handers Matt Harrison (back) and Derek Holland (left knee). Harrison could be return before the end of the April. Colby Lewis, who missed all of last season recovering from elbow surgery and then having hip surgery, is making a minor league start Tuesday after a solid spring. "We are going to get a few of these guys back pretty soon," Daniels said. "Its an opportunity for other guys to step up, and when were healthy and we get Colby and Yu back in a week or whatever it is, and get Matt back two weeks after that, I think youll look up and be like weve got some tough calls to make with other guys who have stepped up, and have stepped up and seized that opportunity. I dont buy into all the doom and gloom stuff," he said. Tanner Scheppers made his first career start for Texas on opening day, and is to be followed by Martin Perez, Robbie Ross and Joe Saunders. None were in the Rangers rotation at the start of last season -- Scheppers and Ross were relievers. The fifth starter is expected to be right-hander Nick Martinez, a right-hander who has never pitched about Double-A and isnt yet on the 25-man roster. The Rangers have said Martinez is the scheduled starter Saturday night at Tampa Bay. "Just because Darvish comes off on the fifth doesnt mean Martinez is going to get kicked out," Washington said.
