LONDON, ONT – Paul Ranger hadnt played in an NHL setting of any kind in nearly four years until the Leafs opened their exhibition schedule in London on Sunday night. "It was my first game back really at this level and it went pretty well," said Ranger, who scored the fourth and final goal as his team topped the Flyers 4-3 at Budweiser Gardens. It was a night of firsts in many respects for the Leafs, first in the sense of impressions and opportunity at a training camp that promises its fair share of battles. There was Morgan Rielly in his first audition for a job on the crowded Toronto defence. There was Mason Raymond vying for an NHL gig with waves of speed, bursting past a Philly defender for a shorthanded goal. And there was of course, Ranger playing in his first NHL game (albeit exhibition) since October 2009, the 29-year-old inked to a one-year deal with the club this past summer. "As the game went on I felt more and more comfortable," said Ranger, who admitted the presence of a few nerves before the game. "Mentally you settle down and get more in tune with everything." With a sturdy defensive game, surprising mobility and a high-caliber first pass, Ranger looked the part of an NHL defender, one the Leafs are hopeful will contribute in a significant way this season. The opener marked a good first step. Ten years his junior sits Rielly, the fifth overall selection in 2012 getting his first opportunity to build a case for entry on the NHL roster this fall, a decision that will likely linger until final cuts are made. "I think after I had a chance to get used to the pace and what not I was pretty happy with how it went," said Rielly, paired with Korbinian Holzer initially before shifting alongside Ranger in the third. "Rielly who?" Leafs coach Randy Carlyle quipped, already tired of the daily questions regarding the organizations top prospect. "Obviously he skates, (but) can he continue to do what hes done in Junior at the NHL and I dont know how plainer I can say that." Rielly was joined in his first bit of NHL action by fellow first round pick Frederik Gauthier (2013) as well as the 188th overall selection in 2008 and a dark horse to contribute to the Leafs at some point this season, 23-year-old Andrew MacWilliam. Pegged to start the year with the Marlies, MacWilliam performed with the edge hed become known for at the University of North Dakota, where he served as captain last season. "Its the next level," said MacWilliam of his first professional game, "guys are bigger, guys are faster, but after the first period I felt I got my legs underneath me a little bit and thought I got my skating going and thought I was okay." "Its good to see the young kids get their first taste and thats the most important thing is they understand that this wasnt an NHL game, but it was an exhibition game and theres another level that the league plays to," Carlyle observed. Five Points 1. Reimers first look Also getting a first look on Sunday was James Reimer, who received opening duties against the Flyers, the 26-year-old stopping 14 of 17 shots in 28 minutes of action. "Its getting used to the game situation," said Reimer of expectations for the early portion of the exhibition schedule. "Its getting used to plays in traffic, trying to see the puck, fighting bodies, stuff like that that you cant really replicate anywhere else." Reimer yielded three pucks, the first a point shot that was deflected through traffic, the second a rebound plucked home off another point shot, the third a final point drive that caromed off the end boards and was quickly tapped in. "You dont want to let three goals in a game," said Reimer. "But I felt that I wasnt beat clean and they were all some tough bounces. I was happy with the way I played and felt that I built a lot and accomplished a lot of things I wanted to." Earlier in the day, the Leafs incumbent starter – now challenged for the job – noted the need to readjust to the speed of game action following an offseason of training. "Summer hockey is so slow and guys dont shoot the puck, they hold onto it, pass, pass, pass," explained Reimer. "So even (Saturday) in the scrimmage there was a couple plays where its just quicker than what youre used to. In exhibition its just getting that timing back and being in the right place at the right time." 2. Case for Raymond The first impression for Mason Raymond was generally positive, the Calgary speedster surging for a shorthanded breakaway goal. "Obviously with the type of speed that he has its going to be hard for somebody to catch him and they didnt catch him and he found a way," said Carlyle. Formerly a 25-goal man with the Canucks, Raymond was inked to a professional tryout on the eve of training camp. The 27-year-old could prove an intriguing add if he and the club find a fit. The Leafs lost speed, skill and depth with the offseason departures of Mikhail Grabovski, Clarke MacArthur and Matt Frattin and would be dinged further with any significant injury to their top-six complement (Joffrey Lupul notably has yet to take the ice in training camp, suffering from back spasms). Raymond could help to address that potential weakness. A water-bug who seems to dart from space to space on the ice, Raymond would offer added ability, experience and hints of offence on the wing. 3. Sophomore shot The first extended stint of NHL action had its share of turmoil for Korbinian Holzer, the now 25-year-old defender playing 22 games in 2013, mostly under siege alongside Dion Phaneuf on the Leafs top pair. "It was a good way to learn what it takes to be an everyday player in the NHL," said Holzer of the experience. "I had the opportunity to play (against) the best players in the league for a lot of games and played a lot of minutes. It was a good experience and a good learning curve. I think overall I learned what it takes to be an everyday player." Thrust into duty that was probably beyond his means as a rookie – playing nightly opposite top lines – Holzer learned his fair share and believes the experience will ultimately prove beneficial. "Youve got to be aware every second youre out there," said Holzer of the most prominent lesson from the shortened season. "You cant take one second off. As soon as you step on the ice youve got to be ready and expect the unexpected." Holzer will face an uphill battle to make the roster, competing with the likes of Ranger, Rielly, John-Michael Liles, Mark Fraser, and Petter Granberg. "He should take the experience and look at the positives that he was able to come in and play for our hockey club and he got his feet wet in the NHL," said Carlyle of Holzer. "Now its take the next step." 4. More MacWilliam Carlyle had the inside track on MacWilliam heading into camp because of an old connection from his playing days. Brad Berry, now an assistant coach who runs the defence at North Dakota, played with Carlyle in Winnipeg. "He acquitted very well in his first pro game," said Carlyle. MacWilliam was whistled for a pair of penalties in Sundays action, but proved mobile and a nasty physical presence. 5. Veterans in exhibition While he offers some leniency, Carlyle does have certain expectations of the veterans in his dressing room during the exhibition season. "Its important that they get themselves ready," said Carlyle. "(But) I think the veteran guys get a little bit more room and a little bit of slack from the coaching staff in that perspective." Quote of the Night "As we all know the salary cap world changes things, its a different way of evaluating sometimes when youre forced to make decisions based upon contract amount. Its a new animal in the league and thats the reality of it." -Randy Carlyle on the training camp evaluation process. Up Next The Leafs host the Flyers at the Air Canada Centre on Monday night. BALTIMORE -- The Baltimore Orioles had gone nearly a week without a victory, a stretch that included three one-run defeats in Arizona and a lopsided loss to Colorado at home. So, when they finally got to add another digit to their win total, the Orioles didnt really care if the outcome was influenced by their opponents mistakes. Brian Roberts and Manny Machado both hit two-run doubles during a seven-run third inning fueled by Colorado miscues, and Baltimore defeated the Rockies 8-4 Saturday night to end a four-game skid. Adam Jones had two hits in Baltimores highest-scoring inning of the season, which featured an error by shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, two walks, a passed ball and a wild pitch. Six of the seven runs were unearned, but when it was done the Orioles had an 8-1 lead. "It was huge," winning pitcher Bud Norris said. "It was a tough stretch there in Arizona. But just to be back in the win column was huge. To have a seven-run third inning is definitely a help to any starting pitcher going out there. I just wanted to keep putting up zeroes and the bullpen really came in and picked me up, too." Norris (9-10) gave up four runs and nine hits over 5 2-3 innings to improve to 3-1 since coming to the Orioles in a trade with Houston on July 31. He was followed by a relief corps that allowed only three hits the rest of way. "This is the big leagues. The third inning with a seven-run lead is never comfortable," said Tommy Hunter, who worked the ninth. "Guys came in and threw the ball well in certain situations and got us to the end of the ballgame with a four-run lead." Most of the damage in the third inning came against Colorado rookie Chad Bettis (0-2), who allowed seven hits, four walks and eight runs in 2 2-3 innings. "It was really embarrassing," Bettis said. "I need to be better. I wasnt making the right pitches." Baltimores third inning began with a double by Chris Davis and an infield hit by Jones. Nick Markakis followed with an RBI single, and one out later Colorado brought the infield in with runners on second and third. Steve Pearce hit a grounder that got past Tulowitzki, allowing Jones to score. "I think Tul probably looked up to see if the runner was taking off from third," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "But, hes been as good as you can possibly be at shortstop. Hes not going to make every play for six months." Following the second out, Roberts doubled in two runs, Nate McLouth walked and Machado hit his major league-leading 43rd double. Adam Ottavino replaced Bettis and walked Davis before Jones delivered an RBI single for a seven-run cushion. "Ive never been a part of a bad seven-run inning, when youre the one scoring it," Roberts said. "Obviously, we needed a little something to kind of jump start us and that was big, to use the extra out they gave us to put some runs on the board. Everyone kind of breathed a little sigh of relief and said, All right. Now were ready to go." Dexter Fowler hit RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings for the Rockies, who lost for only the second time in eight games. Colorado stranded 11 and went 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position. Jones had three hits and Davis picked up his 113th RBI to help the Orioles secure their first victory since beating San Francisco last Sunday. "I think people panic a little more outside the clubhouse than we do inside the clubhouse," Roberts said. "We all still feel like we are in pretty good shape." Colorado got two hits and two walks in the first inning but scored only once, when Tulowitzki bounced into a double play. In the bottom half, McLouth drew a leadoff walk, advanced on a single by Machado and came home on a fly ball by Davis. Although the Orioles left the bases loaded in the second, they made up for it in the third. NOTES: Orioles SS J.J. Hardy was late scratch with back spasms. AVONDALE, La. - IndyCar racing officials expressed confidence on Monday that the NOLA Motorsports Park will be able to complete more $4.5 million in improvements needed to host the proposed Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana in suburban New Orleans next year. "IndyCar is on the rise and we are determined to be in great markets in this country and eventually throughout the world," IndyCar chief Mark Miles said in an announcement at the track on Monday. "We have no doubt this will be one of the great venues for Indy Car racing in very little time." Gov. Bobby Jindal, joined by officials from the track and Andretti Sports Marketing, said the race is expected to be locked into the IndyCar schedule for "at least three years, though the goal is to make this a permanent event." Ongoing negotiations include scheduling a weekend for the event, which would also affect the timeline for track improvements that Miles said are needed for "safety, fan enjoyment and quality of racing." Jindal will need state Legislative approval for $4.5 million, which will be combined with private money to make improvements, including pit area, straight away and perimeter fencing enhancements. Organizers estimated as many as 80,000 spectators attending over the three-day event, which is slated to include a "racing festival" including live music and other entertainment. "This is great news for Jefferson Parish and our entire state," Jindal said. "This three-day event would allow us to show off the excitement of an IndyCar race right here in Louisiana, as well as our states culture, entertainment and food. This event will be a great economic driver." The NOLA Motorsports Park, a private, $60 million facility about 14 miles southwest of downtown New Orleans, features a 2.75-mile road course that has already hosted AMA motorcycle racing and developmental levels of open-wheel auto racing including the Indy Lights, Pro Mazda and USF2000 series. The track is owned by Dr. Laney Chouest, whose family founded and operates Edison Chouest Offshore, reputedly one of the worlds leading builders and operators of sea vessels specially designed to service the offshore oil and gas industries. "We wouldnt be here without the vision of Dr. Laney Chouest," Jindal said. "Hes built this beautiful facility as a labour of love and today were seeing one of the benefits to the state." Chouest thanked Jindal for supporting a "public-private partnership that will leverage the significant private investment we made into this facility." Organizers were confident enough in the events success that they launched an Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana website, indynola.com, which referred to the event as, "Inevitable." "Im really pleased to see IndyCar preparing to bring a race to NOLA," said former racer Michael Andretti, CEO of Andretti Sports Marketing. "New Orleans is a great market to grow the sport and Im excited to have Andretti Sports Marketing involved with the operations and promotion of the inaugural Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana." IndyCar, which includes the Indianapolis 500 as its marquee event, is the premier American-based open-wheel racing series. Currently, the series drivers include Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan and Scott Dixon, who are former Indy 500 winners, as well as Marco Andretti, the grandson of former racing great Mario Andretti, and Graham Rahal, son of 1986 Indy winner Bobby Rahal. BOCA RATON, Fla. -- NHL general managers spent the first day of their three-day meetings discussing overtime and shootouts, expanded video reviews and goalie interference. The opening session Monday featured three breakout groups of 10 general managers, with each group assigned particular topics. There appears to be some concern that too many games are being decided in shootouts instead of during the flow of play. Of the 135 of 963 games played through last Saturday, 14 per cent were decided in a shootout. And 40 per cent that went to overtime were decided in a shootout. Among the suggested changes being discussed are a 3-on-3 element instead of four skaters apiece in the extra 5-minute session; extending the overtime; or requiring teams to switch ends of the ice, creating a longer change on line changes. But there doesnt seem to be a strong consensus toward any particular direction -- or even if overtime needs to be changed. Colin Campbell, the NHL executive vice-president and director of hockey operations, viewed the overtime issue as both an official and a hockey fan. "I think what the challenge is to maybe not have as many shootouts," Campbell said. "A lot of people in the game would rather see the game decided (not) in a skills contest. "I would, too, but Im the last one to leave the room when theyre doing the shootout. I like watching to see whats going to happen. So Im kind of torn in that direction." The discussion of expanded video review seems weighted on when to start reviewing the tape and how much time a review takes. "I will say there wasnt a lot of consensus on the criteria," said Craig MacTavish, Edmontons general manager. "Theres a lot that goes into it when youre trying to evaluate the specific criteria, like how long from the incident are you going to reel it back? "There was no resolution in our group in terms of making many changes to video review." The increase in activity around the net has also led to an interest in goalie interference at this weeks meetings. "Theres so much play around the net now, the way our game is now with everybody collapsing and boxing out and blocking shots," said Bryan Murray, Ottawas GM. "All the plays now that are goals, in most cases, theres some kind of foot in the crease. Im not interested in that. But if the goaltender is not allowed to make a play on the shot, then we should we get the call as correct as we can." Also on the agenda is kicked-in goals. "I think there is an appetite to have directed goals be allowed," said Tim Murray, Buffalos general manager. "I know it says distinct kicking motion, but (with) a blatant lift-your-foot-off-the-ice kick type of thing not allowed." On Tuesday, members of the breakout groups will report to the whole meeting. NCCU, the odds-on favorite to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, stumbled out of the gate with a challenging schedule, losing to North Carolina, Creighton and Cincinnati, but since then it has ripped off five straight wins to improve to 6-3. The Eagles began MEAC play over the weekend by defeating Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday (68-63) and Howard on Sunday (61-39). Maryland opened the season up with six straight wins to surge into the Top-25 before suffering its first setback of the season to Virginia in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 3, 76-65. The Terps bounced back on Saturday afternoon with an easy win over Winthrop, 82-62. Maryland defeated NCCU in the only previous meeting between the programs last December in College Park, 70-56. The Eagles most recent contest was never in question, as they opened up a 27-19 halftime lead over Howard and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 22-point victory. They shot 47.8 percent from the field, including 10-of-25 from 3-point range, all while holding Howard to less than 30 percent shooting overall. Anthony McDonald was especially active from beyond the arc (7-of-15) on his way to a game-high 21 points. Jordan Parks tallied a true double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Nimrod Hilliard contributed nine points and eight assists. On the season, NCCU boasts stellar percentages from the field (.4880) and 3- point range (.dddddddddddd396) and scores 68.1 ppg, which is more than enough to support an outstanding defense that allows just 53.4 ppg on 34.6 percent shooting. McDonald leads the way with 14.6 ppg and has drained 36-of-82 from long range (.439). Parks (14.1 ppg, 6.6 rpg) is right on McDonalds heels for the scoring lead, while Dante Holmes chips in 11.9 ppg. The Terps had their hands full with Winthrop early on in their latest contest, as they were locked up in a tie game early in the second stanza, but they took control with a 7-0 run and eventually pulled away for the 20-point victory. Not only did they outshoot Winthrop from the field (47.8 percent to 36.2 percent), but they outscored it at the free-throw line (29-11) and held a firm advantage on the glass (37-26). Jake Layman poured in a game-high 21 points, while Melo Trimble logged 16 points and seven assists. Richaud Pack also scored 16, Jared Nickens netted 12 off the bench and Damonte Dodd added nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Maryland has performed well on both ends of the floor this season, scoring 76.5 ppg on a lofty 48.5 percent field goal shooting while allowing just 62.5 ppg on 37 percent from the floor. The squad isnt at full strength with Dez Wells (16.2 ppg) out with a broken wrist, but theres still some good talent to rely on. Trimble (16.5 ppg) has assumed the role of go-to scorer and has impressive percentages from the field (.477), 3-point range (.441) and the foul line (.887). Layman brings 14.5 ppg and 5.6 rpg to the mix, and Dion Wiley (8.3 ppg) acts as a spark off the bench. ' ' '
Former NFL lineman Jeremy Newberry often hobbled into the 49ers locker room on game days using a walking boot and crutches, then lined up behind as many as two dozen teammates, in his case to get a shot of the painkiller Toradol in the butt. Ten minutes later, he sprinted out of the tunnel and onto the field. The toughness of pro football players may be legendary, but a lawsuit filed Tuesday on behalf of more than 600 former players contends it was abetted by team physicians and trainers across the NFL who routinely -- and often illegally -- dispensed powerful narcotics and other controlled substances on game days to mask the pain. Among them were the painkillers Percodan, Percocet and Vicodin, anti-inflammatories such as Toradol, and sleep aids such as Ambien -- "handed out like candy at Halloween," according to lead attorney Steven SIlverman. Sometimes, the lawsuit also charges, the drugs were given in combinations as "cocktails." "The stuff works," Newberry, who played seven of his nine seasons in San Francisco before retiring in 2009, told The Associated Press in an interview. "It works like crazy. It really does." But only for so long. Newberry, now 38 and one of the eight plaintiffs so far named in the lawsuit, says that because of the drugs he took while playing, he suffers from kidney failure, high blood pressure and violent headaches. Others -- including three members of the NFL champion 1985 Chicago Bears: quarterback Jim McMahon, Hall of Fame defensive end Richard Dent and offensive lineman Keith Van Horne -- reported a range of debilitating effects, from chronic muscle and bone ailments to permanent nerve and organ damage to addiction. "Our attorneys have not seen the lawsuit," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, in Atlanta for the leagues spring meetings, "and obviously I have been in meetings all day." The lawsuits main burden is proving cause and effect -- that use of painkillers long ago is responsible for chronic problems the players face now. The claims are for a wide variety of problems that are common in older people, such as high blood pressure, knee replacements, arthritis, kidney problems, heart attacks and abnormal heart rhythms. The diversity of these problems, affecting so many different parts and body systems, tends to argue against a single cause, such as painkiller use. The players also would have to show that they are suffering these problems at a greater rate than other people their age, and that its not due to other risk factors such as obesity, smoking and family history. Six of the plaintiffs in the new lawsuit filed in federal court in San Francisco, including McMahon and Van Horne, were also parties to the concussion-related class-action lawsuit less than a year ago. The NFL agreed to pay $765 million to settle that case -- without acknowledging it concealed the risks of concussions from former players. A federal judge has yet to approve the settlement, expressing concern the amount is too small. "The difference is that the concussion case claimed the NFL knew or should have known," Silverman said. "Were saying this was intentional, putting profits ahead of players health -- and in violation of federal controlled substance laws, as well as state laws. You dont order hundreds of narcotic painkillers in their names without telling them." The lawsuit covers the years 1968-2008. Silverman said a number of clients reported teams had "tightened up" dispensing procedures since then, including one incident in which a player said a trainer waited until the team plane on a flight home was 10,000 feet in the air before handing over a narcotic "to avoid violating any state laws." McMahon and Van Horne were among several players wqho said they were never told about broken bones and fed pills to mask the pain instead. Toradol, which players called a "full-body numb-er" and "the current game-day drug of choice of the NFL" was prevalent enough that Newberry described frequently seeing both teammates and opponents during warm-ups with blood spots on the buttocks of their pants -- a telltale sign theyd taken a pre-game injection. "There was a room set up near the locker room and you got in line," said Kyle Turley, who played for three NFL teams in an eight-year career. "Obviously, we were grown adults and we had a choice. But when a team doctor is saying this will take the pain away, you trust them. Newberry said he regrets that decision now, but never considered not taking the drugs during his career because he feared hed be out of a job if he didnt play. After his retirement, a specialist who reviewed his medical records concluded the protein levels in his urine had been elevated -- a precursor to kidney problems -- for years. Newberry said he got blood work during a team-sponsored physical every year but was never told about any problems. "They said, Youre good to go, you passed another one. Youre cleared to play," he recalled. Silverman said he planned to serve the NFL with the lawsuit within the next 120 days, after which the league has 30 days to respond. The case could be significantly delayed if there are similar filings and the lawsuits are eventually consolidated into a single class-action. "We hope this gets to trial," Silverman said. "I could see a scenario where, if it were to go to discovery, there would be more doctors and trainers taking the Fifth (Amendment) than providing sworn testimony. We think the problem is that profound." Tyler ONeill . The 49ers announced the deal Thursday. San Francisco selected Kilgore in the fifth round of the 2011 draft out of Appalachian State. Ty Lawson scored 18 points, including a key 3-pointer with less than a minute to play, and the Nuggets snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 111-108 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night. "Its a wonderful feeling," said Kenneth Faried, one of six Nuggets to score in double figures. "We got the monkey off our back. We cant put it back on." Lawson also had 12 assists for the Nuggets, who played without Andre Miller. His two-game suspension stemming from a verbal clash with coach Brian Shaw during Wednesdays loss to the Philadelphia 76ers was rescinded by the club earlier Friday. But Miller, who lit into Shaw over his lack of playing time in the waning minutes of Wednesdays game in full view of fans and teammates, will remain away from the team until Monday under a newly issued personal leave. With frustration and uncertainty running rampant, Shaw held individual meetings with his players, and then had a group session with the team Thursday. "It was great," guard Randy Foye said. "Coach called us in and just explained how much confidence he had in us, what he expected from us. He reassured us that hes with us 120 per cent. He told us that he needs us to be with him 120 per cent, and to believe in the game plan. Coach was awesome, explaining the things that he needed from us, and I think guys took that and ran with it." Shaw said dealing with the fallout from the losing streak as well as the verbal clash with Miller was just part of the job. "Everything thats gone on in the last 48 hours is part of what you sign up for," Shaw said. "Theres ups and downs. ... But just allowing everybody to voice how they felt about the way things were going, assess themselves, assess us as a coaching staff, I think that just liberated everyone." Faried and Timofey Mozgov added 16 points apiece for Denver and Nate Robinson had 15 points, including nine in the fourth quarter. Zach Randolph had 25 points to lead Memphis and Mike Conley added 23.dddddddddddd Mike Miller narrowly missed a tying 3-pointer at the buzzer. "We didnt guard well," Grizzlies coach David Joerger said. "They got the loose balls. They got the offensive rebounds and we didnt convert on fast breaks. We gave up too many easy baskets." Trailing by 10 at the break, the Grizzlies got back in the game by opening the third quarter with a 13-4 run. Tony Allens layup little more than three minutes later put the Grizzlies in front 65-64, their first lead since the opening moments of the game. The Nuggets came back, with help from a three-point play by Evan Fournier and a 3-pointer by Robinson to take a 77-75 lead into the fourth quarter. The Nuggets extended their lead to 87-77 with 9:32 remaining, getting 3-pointers from Randy Foye and Robinson around a breakaway dunk by Faired. The Grizzlies made another push, getting seven consecutive points capped by Conleys 3-pointer to pull to 98-96 with 4:05 left. Robinson answered with a 3-pointer to give the Nuggets a bit of breathing room, but Tayshaun Prince drained a 3-pointer with a minute left, getting the Grizzlies within 107-104. Lawson rebuilt the Nuggets lead to six points with a clutch 3-pointer with 53.1 seconds left. Memphis scored the next four points, and with 4.1 seconds left fouled Robinson, who made one of two free throws with the Grizzlies rebounding and getting the ball with just over 3 seconds remaining. Millers attempt for a tying 3-pointer hit the back of the rim and bounced out. "They played desperate. They needed a win and they played like it," Conley said. "They worked hard for it and they outworked us at the end." NOTES: Lawson has had eight points-assists double doubles this season. ... Mozgov has come off the bench to score in double figures 13 times this season. ... Memphis outscored the Nuggets 27-19 in the third quarter, getting 12 of its points from the free throw line. ... The Grizzlies attempted 38 free throws in all, making 29. Only Houston (44 on Nov. 16) shot more free throws against the Nuggets. ... Randolph reached 25 points and 13 rebounds in a game for the third time this season. ' ' '
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- FIFA said Thursday it was investigating claims that Mexico fans chanted anti-gay slurs during their opening match against Cameroon. FIFA said "disciplinary proceedings were opened against Mexico for improper conduct of spectators" last Friday in Natal. The same chants were heard during Mexicos second match against Brazil in Fortaleza on Tuesday. They are often heard at matches is Mexico, usually as a keeper takes a goal kick. "FIFA takes a firm, zero-tolerance stand against any form of discrimination or racism," FIFA said in a statement. FIFA President Sepp Blatter and Brazil President Dilma Rousseff have pledged to use the World Cup as a platform to fight racism and discrimination. Fare, the European fan-monitoring group, has also alerted FIFA to far-right banners displayed by Croatia and Russia fans inside stadiums. FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer said no inquiry had been opened against any country other than Mexico. OAKLAND, Calif. -- James Shields pitched quite a gem for Kansas City. It certainly helped that Oakland abandoned its usual patient approach at the plate. Shields pitched eight sharp innings for his first win in nearly a month, and the Royals beat the Athletics 4-2 on Sunday. "This team was a free-hacking team today, which is not really their game," Shields said. "They have a bunch of hitters over there that were being aggressive and I was able to execute my pitches early in the count." Shields retired his first 15 batters before Josh Reddick hit a leadoff homer in the sixth. Alberto Callaspo then had a one-out single before Sam Fuld lined into a double play. The 32-year-old Shields (10-6) allowed two runs and four hits. He walked none for the fifth time this season. "You watch the way that hes pitching, its like, OK boys, lets just give him a couple runs and hell take it from there," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. "A good indicator for him was he was managing his pitch count." Shields threw 102 pitches while helping the Royals to their ninth win in 12 games. "As far as Im concerned we can match up with anyone, any team, any starting rotation," Shields said. "As long as we go toe to toe with those guys were going to be in every game." Reddick homered twice, getting to Shields again in the eighth. The As have the best record in baseball at 67-43, but have sputtered offensively since trading cleanup hitter Yoenis Cespedes to Boston on Thursday in a deal for ace Jon Lester. They lead the stacked AL West by one game over the Los Angeles Angels, who beat Tampa Bay 7-5 on Sunday. Oakland was without injured leadoff hitter Coco Crisp, though it hardly mattered the way Shields was pitching. Shields allowed only three balls out of the infield through the first five innings.dddddddddddd One of them was a deep fly to centre by Josh Donaldson in the first, the closest Oakland came to getting a man on base before Reddicks home run. "We just havent been our best offensively here," As manager Bob Melvin said. "Shields was using all his pitches, going to the change, to the cutter, and he had good command." Shields got his first win since he beat his former team, Tampa Bay, on July 7. Greg Holland pitched the ninth for his AL-leading 31st save. Nori Aokis RBI single in the fifth gave Kansas City a 1-0 lead. Omar Infante followed with a two-run double and later scored on a single by Salvador Perez. All the runs came against Scott Kazmir (12-4). Reddick has four home runs since coming off the disabled list July 22. Its the sixth multihomer game of his career and second this season. KAZMIRS STREAK AT HOME ENDS Kazmir lost at the Oakland Coliseum for just the second time this season. Its also the first time since June 24 that the left-hander allowed more than two earned runs. CLOSING IN ON 800 It was Yosts 798th win as a manager, moving him one ahead of Melvin for 76th on the career list. The Toronto Blue Jays will be looking to regain some ground in the American League East as they open a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre. Toronto won its first three-game series since June 25th this past weekend by taking two out of three from the Texas Rangers, shaving the Baltimore Orioles division lead to three games. The Red Sox will turn to veteran righty John Lackey, who has struggled in his career versus the Blue Jays. going 5-8 with a 5.43 ERA in 10 starts against them. The ERA is his second-highest against any AL club. Lackey won his last start back on July 11 in Houston, as he held the Astros to a pair of runs in six innings to improve to 10-6 to go along with a 3.79 ERA. He had allowed five earned runs or more in three consecutive starts from late June into July. Toronto, meanwhile, will counter with righty Drew Hutchison, who has lost four of his last five starts and is 6-8 on the year with a 4.16 ERA. Hutchison was awful on July 12 versus the Tampa Bay Rays, as he was battered to the tune of six runs in 5 1/3 innings. He also walked five batters in the loss. Hutchison has beaten the Red Sox both times he has faced them and has allowed just two runs in 12 2/3 innings against them. Toronto enters this series on the heels of a series win over the hapless Texas Rangers. In Sundays rubber match, Melky Cabrera went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI to propel the Blue Jays to a 9-6 win. "We came to life today," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "I felt a little more energy in the dugout." Todd Redmond (1-4) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win. Mark Buehrle, who started for the Blue Jays, gave up five runs on eight hits and three walks in six innings of work. Cabrera, whose 124 hits trail only Houstons Jose Altuve in the American League, was 7-for-13 in the series versus the Rangers. His three RBI also match his total from his previous 17 games. "The All-Star break did him wonders," Gibbons said. "He just needed to refresh a little bit. His hand speed, bat speed looks a little bit better." The Blue Jays have won each of their last four games versus the Red Sox, including a three-game sweep in Boston from May 20-22. Boston won for the seventh time in eight games on Sunday, as Jon Lester continued his recent dominance on the hill and the Red Sox completed a three- game sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 6-0 victory at Fenway Park. Lester (10-7) scattered four hits and two walks while striking out eight over as many innings to pick up another win. The left-hander has allowed just one earned run over his last 31 innings and has limited opponents to two earned runs or less in each of his last seven outings, lowering his ERA from 3.52 to 2.50 over that span. "Hes been outstanding," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of his starter. "Its been his best stretch in quite some time." Daniel Nava drove in three runs and David Ross added a two-run homer in the win for Boston, which is now just six games under .500 (46-52). Marquise Goodwin Super Bowl Jersey . Montreal (3-10-5) lost its third straight and Impact coach Frank Klopas said it literally was a case of his players not stepping up.CHICAGO -- The first two happened in a single game in Colorado. There was a fly ball that barely cleared the wall, and then a screaming drive to right-centre. Jose Abreu quickly hit two more home runs against Cleveland. He beat Tampa Bay with a game-ending grand slam, an absolute laser for his second shot of the game. Some 6,000 feet of homers in just six weeks, another successful mile in a well-travelled bridge from Abreus native Cuba to the Chicago White Sox. The big first baseman is punishing major league pitching while making a difficult transition to the United States look almost routine. "I come from a place where there is very good baseball, but theres nowhere you can compare that baseball to this one," Abreu said through a translator. "This is the best baseball in the world. But the only way to achieve this, to come here and be successful, is to be disciplined, to have a lot of discipline, thats the way you improve." Abreu looks right at home. The 6-foot-3, 255-pound slugger connected in Oakland on Wednesday to become the fourth player in major league history to hit 15 homers in his first 42 games, joining Wally Berger, Kevin Maas and Wally Joyner. He is batting .271 with 41 RBIs heading into a weekend series at Houston. Abreu, who defected in 2012 and finalized a $68 million, six-year deal with the White Sox in October, is among the major league leaders in several offensive categories. Playing at hitter-friendly U.S. Cellular Field, he is a legitimate threat to become baseballs first rookie home run king since Mark McGwire for the Athletics in 1987. "Its just his strength, his power," White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham said. "I mean hes just strong. You can do what he does with how strong he is, because he doesnt do a lot with his swing, his body to get ready to hit. He just drops the head of the bat on it and its gone." All that power has captured the attention of baseball fans across the country, but it is Abreus appreciative attitude that has quickly endeared him to his teammates. No small feat considering Abreus arrival pushed franchise icon Paul Konerko into a reserve role. "Hes such a good team person and you like to see stuff like this happen to people like him," manager Robin Ventura said. Abreu is the latest in a new wave of Cuban stars finding success all over baseball, and part of a long history of successful Cuban players in Chicago. Sluggers Yoenis Cespedes of Oakland and Yasiel Puig of the Dodgers are two of the majors most dangerous bats. Cincinnati left-hander Aroldis Chapman has blossomed into an All-Star closer. Miami right-hander Jose Fernnandez was the NL Rookie of the Year last season.dddddddddddd There were a record 19 Cuban players on opening-day rosters and inactive lists this year. "I think clubs are learning more and more how to do it," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. Cuban players often travel a dangerous road to the majors. According to court documents in a federal lawsuit in Miami, smugglers who helped Puig leave his country on a speedboat have made death threats against him and against a boxer who says he defected with Puig. When they make it to the U.S., they face what can be an isolating transition to a completely different culture and the rigours of the majors. One of the biggest challenges is the language barrier, but they also have to work through changes brought on by a level of wealth and fame far beyond what they could have experienced in their home country. Major league teams are more careful than ever these days about creating a positive atmosphere for the Cuban players, making sure there is a translator in the clubhouse and help nearby when it comes to challenges on and off the field. The 27-year-old Abreu has three Cuban teammates; shortstop Alexei Ramirez, outfielder Dayan Viciedo and catcher Adrian Nieto. Lino Diaz, the manager of cultural development for the White Sox, also is around if Abreu needs any assistance. The White Sox have had 18 Cuban-born players in franchise history, tied with the Los Angeles Angels for fourth among all major league franchises, according to STATS. Minnie Minoso, regarded as baseballs first black Latino star, played 12 of his 17 seasons in Chicago and remains a team ambassador. Orlando Hernandez helped the White Sox win their last World Series title in 2005. Abreus fast start is drawing interest back home. The slugger is followed as closely as possible in a country where, despite the appearance of recorded major league games on state TV starting in March 2013, games featuring Cuban defectors are still not shown. Cubans with access to the Internet and bootleg versions track his career and often discuss it at the "hot corner," a spot in Havanas Parque Central where baseball fans gather to discuss international and Cuban players. "Abreu is a powerful hitter, he was really good here, but personally I think that with his major league results hes really exceeded expectations," said Jose Estrada, 55. "All over Cuba were following him much more than before because hes Cuban and he represents Cuba in the country with the best baseball in the world, the major leagues, and hes showing everyone the level of Cuban baseball." That level looks better than ever right now. ' ' '

Tampa Bay currently holds the last of the Atlantics three automatic bids to the playoffs, but the Maple Leafs are just one point behind.BOSTON - The St. Louis Cardinals have a problem on their hands. Its not how poorly they played in the World Series opener or whether theyre able to bounce back with a better performance on Thursday night. It appears, after a cold spell, David Ortiz is heating up. "Big Papi," as hes affectionately known in these parts, has had an up and down fall. After torching the Tampa Bay Rays in the Division Series to the tune of .385/.556/.923, two home runs, a double and three RBI, Ortiz slumped in the ALCS. Tigers pitching held him to just two hits and a .091/.200/.227 slash line. Its easy to forget Ortiz struggled against Detroit because one of his two hits was an eighth inning grand slam in Game 2 that erased a 5-1 deficit, propelled the Red Sox to a series-evening victory and may well have saved Bostons chances of advancing. The other was a dunk single to left field in Game 5. The mantra of good teams is when one player is struggling; another guy - or guys - picks him up. Dustin Pedroia has been finding ways to get on base. Mike Napoli has been hot since his home run off Justin Verlander in Game Three of the ALCS. Ortiz seemed to break out on Wednesday night. He was robbed of a second inning grand slam by Carlos Beltran but later singled and, in the eighth inning, hit a two-run home run he made sure cleared the right centerfield fence. If not for Beltrans great catch, Ortiz would have had a two home run, three hit, six RBI night. To this point in the playoffs, not that its deterred them; the Red Sox havent had Pedroia, Ortiz and Napoli hitting well at the same time. If last nights performance is an indicator of whats to come, Boston is in good shape. "Im very encouraged, particularly with what Mike Napoli has done since probably Game 3 of the ALCS," said Farrell.dddddddddddd. "Probably each guy has the ability to carry us. And the fact that we can get the middle of the order going like that - we still have other guys we need to get going." St. Louis, on the other hand, has non-performance related issues in the middle of its order. An injury and a recovery have put two key players in difficult positions. Beltran was injured making the catch on Ortizs would-be grand slam. He left the game and went to hospital for tests. A CT scan and an X-ray showed no fractures and he will attempt to play through a deeply bruised right side of his ribcage. Its hard to imagine Beltran wont be compromised by the injury. Meantime, Allen Craig will be the Cardinals designated hitter again in Game 2. He returned last night, having not played since September 4 due to a sprained foot. Craig had a single in four at-bats and is being asked to quickly find his offensive timing with so little time left in the season. Farrells starting lineup will suffer with the deletion of either Ortiz or Napoli under National League rules. It appears Ortiz will get the Game 3 start at first base, relegating Napoli to a pinch hit role. The Cardinals dont have a left-handed starting pitcher so Ortiz could get all the starts at Busch Stadium. Napolis degenerative hip condition prevents him from returning to catcher, a position which hes played for most of his career. "The one outside view might be to put Mike Napoli behind the plate but we wouldnt do that," said Farrell. "One or the other is going to sit, unfortunately." ' ' '
NEW YORK -- California Chrome arrived in New York on Tuesday to begin preparations for his bid to become horse racings first Triple Crown winner in 36 years. The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner arrived at Belmont Park after an uneventful four-hour journey by van from Baltimore. He was backed off the van -- he doesnt like walking straight off like most horses -- and then led into the barn by assistant trainer Alan Sherman. California Chrome walked several laps around the barn before being taken outside to pose on the grass for a media horde. He later settled into his stall. "He likes to stand out here and pose," Sherman said. "He loves to get his picture taken. Hes a very inquisitive horse. Hes always checking out whats going on around him. Hes actually been so straightforward to train; hes made our jobs easy." California Chrome will start training on the track daily beginning Wednesday. The 3-year-old colt is set to run in the Belmont Stakes on June 7. He owns a six-race winning streak, including the Derby by 1 3/4 lengths and the Preakness by 1 1/2 lengths. No horse has swept the Derby, Preakness and Belmont since Affirmed in 1978. "I think the industry could really use a Triple Crown winner right now, especially with a story like this," Sherman said. "This horse didnt cost a ton of money to buy him or breed him. This goes to show you never know what can happen in this game." Sherman assists his 77-year-old father, Art, who returned to Southern California after the Preakness. The elder Sherman plans to reunite with his horse and son the week before the Belmont. "Im so proud of my dad for him to be able to do this towards the end of his career," Alan Sherman said. "Hes very deserving." Preakness runner-up Ride On Curlin accompanied California Chrome on the trip from Baltimore. Another Preakness starter under consideration for the Belmont is third-place finisher Social Inclusion, who is scheduled to arrive in New York on Friday. General A Rod (fourth), Ring Weekend (fifth) and Kid Cruz (eighth) are questionable to run in the 1 1/2-mile race. Other probables are Commanding Curve, Danza, Wicked Strong, and Samraat, the second, third, fourth and fifth-place finishers from the Derby; along with Tonalist and Commissioner, who were first and second in the Peter Pan at Belmont; and Intense Holiday, 12th in the Derby. "It looks like it could be a tough one," said Todd Pletcher, who trains Danza, Commissioner and Intense Holiday. Air Force 1 Alte Marble Pack . Boston MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox and free-agent shortstop Stephen Drew have agreed on a one-year contract through the end of this season, the team announced Wednesday. Drew takes the 25-man roster spot of left-hander Felix Doubront, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strain in his pitching shoulder. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but multiple outlets reported that Drew will received around $10 million -- the prorated portion of the $14.1 million offer he declined last November. Drew batted .253 with 13 homers and a .333 on-base percentage in 124 games for the Red Sox last season, then started all 16 postseason games in Bostons run to the World Series title. Teams were reluctant to sign the eight-year veteran in the offseason because they would have had to surrender a high draft pick since Drew received a qualifying offer from the Red Sox. Boston will not have to forfeit a draft pick for re-signing Drew because he was its own free agent. Doubront started Tuesdays game against Toronto, a 7-4 Boston loss. He left in the fifth inning and said later he felt numbness in his shoulder, described by the Red Sox on Wednesday as "fatigue." Custom Packers Super Bowl Jerseys . CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Laura Diaz had a hole-in-one for the second straight day in the Kia Classic to become the second player in LPGA Tour history to make two aces in a tournament. Diaz aced the par-3 third hole Saturday in the third round, then holed out on the par-3 sixth on Sunday -- a shot she followed with an eagle on the par-4 seventh. She also had an eagle Saturday on the par-5 fifth. "I went out today hoping I could get another one," Diaz said. "Just really using my head to see how wild and crazy it could get. Then it happened and I went nuts. Its pretty crazy." Jenny Lidback is the only other player with two aces in an event, accomplishing the feat in the 1997 Tournament of Champions. Diaz used a 6-iron Sunday on the 157-yard sixth. "I was trying to hit it a little left to right high and take a little bit off of it," Diaz said. "And, yeah, I did it. It went in." On the eagle on No. 7, she holed out from 122 yards with a 50-degree wedge, the club she used to hole out twice Saturday. BELIVEAU DIES Hockey lost perhaps its premier statesman when 83-year-old Hall of Famer Jean Beliveau died this week. Beliveau came up as a supremely-touted prospect, who was making more money playing senior league hockey for the Quebec Aces before he embarked on his pro career with the Montreal Canadiens. Over the course of his career, he scored 1,219 points in 1,125 games and added 176 points in 162 playoff games, winning 10 Stanley Cups with the Habs. During his final season, as a 39-year-old in 1970-71, Beliveau led the Canadiens with 76 points in 70 games, then added 22 points in 20 playoff games on the way to the Stanley Cup. That illustrious career, on its own, was a remarkable achievement, worthy of recognition, but what stands out about Beliveau is that after he retired, he may have been held in even higher esteem for how he carried himself as a representative for the Canadiens. In a purely anecdotal sense, every one that Ive ever come across that met Monsieur Beliveau gushed about the experience. To hold that reputation for 40-plus years in retirement is quite remarkable and it explains why there were so many glowing tributes to Beliveau this week. TSN Hockeys Managing Editor Steve Dryden wrote A Final Farewell to My Idol; Mike Ulmer wrote that Beliveaus Success was Unequaled in NHL History; Teammate Ken Dryden wrote about how Beliveau was such a nice man and venerated Montreal sportswriter Red Fisher offered a great tribute. On video, Michael Farber discussed hockeys Most Universally Respected Player and Man and Keith Olbermann weighed in on Beliveaus class. ALFREDSSON RETIRES Daniel Alfredsson signed a one-day contract so that he could retire with the Ottawa Senators, the team for which he played from 1995-96 through 2012-13. There was an unfortunate turn of events, something about a new contract, that led to Alfredsson leaving Ottawa for Detroit last season, but the fences were mended and Alfredsson was honoured for his illustrious career. Now the question is whether or not Alfredssons career, which included 444 goals and 1,157 points in 1,246 games would warrant induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Through the peak years of his career, from 1999-2000 through 2009-2010, Alfredsson ranked third in the league in scoring (behind Joe Thornton and Jarome Iginla), so his best years were at a very high level. Combine that with his international career, with Sweden, and his place as a face-of-the-franchise player for Ottawa and hes certainly worthy of discussion. ALL-STAR VOTING Second-year Buffalo Sabres centre Zemgus Girgensons is a surprise leader in voting for the NHL All-Star game. That may seem incongruous for a player with 14 points in 26 games, but hes reaping the rewards of national pride, getting mass support from his native Latvia. We can give Girgensons some credit, though. Its not like hes a fringe NHLer. He was the 14th pick in the 2012 Draft, has 10 points (6 G, 4 A) in his past 12 games and leads Sabres forwards in ice time with 18:27 per game. Maybe not quite All-Star calibre, but if he has a dedicated voting base, its going to be tough to knock Girgensons out of the starting lineup. Other leaders: Patrick Kane, Sidney Crosby, P.K. Subban, Duncan Keith and Carey Price. A NEW BLUE 42-year-old Martin Brodeur, a surefire lock Hall of Famer, who is the all-time leader in wins (688) and shutouts (124) played his first game for the St. Louis Blues Thursday, surrendering four goals on 24 shots at Nashville, after playing 1,259 games with the New Jersey Devils. The Blues, in a somewhat desperate position after the injury to Brian Elliott, turned to Brodeur, even though his game has clearly been in decline in recent seasons. What lingers over this decision is how much, ultimately, that Brodeur will play. If hes here, hes going to play, said head coach Ken Hitchcock. Hes not going to back up. If that playing time comes at the expense of Jake Allen, then Brodeurs results simply have to be better than they have been the past couple seasons. PHILLY PHADING The Philadelphia Flyers have one win in their past 11 games, winless in six, and the freefall has led to them leaving some high-priced talent in the press box.dddddddddddd Defenceman Andrew MacDonald, in the first year of a six-year, $30-million contract, spent time as a healthy scratch and, more recently, it has been Vincent Lecavalier. Lecavalier, 34, has seen his game drop off significantly in the past couple seasons and is mired in a personal slump that has seen him score no goals and two assists in his last dozen games. Lecavalier has three more years remaining on his contract, at a cap hit of $4.5-million, and that appears to be, at best, difficult to move. There are rumours that he could retire before his contract is up, but the current reality is a tough one for Philadelphia. Theyre capped out with a team more likely for the lottery than a playoff spot. WATCH YOUR STEP Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford will be out at least a couple weeks after suffering a foot injury at a Rise Against concert. Extra-curricular activities can intrude on a teams day-to-day and it appears that Crawford is the latest hockey player to knock himself out of action. Capitals right winger Tom Wilson broke his leg in the summer and Wild goaltender Josh Harding broke his foot, so its not like these off-ice injuries are unprecedented. With Crawford out, Antti Raanta and Scott Darling will man the net for the Blackhawks. Raanta has been excellent (.947 save percentage) in the four games that he has played this season. JETS DEFENCE GROUNDED With Tobias Enstrom already out, the Winnipeg Jets have also lost Zach Bogosian for a month and Grant Clitsome for a couple weeks, thinning their defence in short order. Desperate times call for desperate measure, so they have pushed Dustin Byfuglien back to the blueline to help out. Byfuglien shifted from defence to right wing last season, but he hasnt been especially productive up front this season, scoring 11 points (5 G, 6 A) in 26 games while primarily on the wing. If Byfuglien happens to be effective in this turn on the blueline, maybe the Jets would consider this move to be more than just a stopgap measure. STRANGE PRACTICE The Los Angeles Kings were fined $100,000 by the league for allowing suspended defenceman Slava Voynov to skate with the team during an optional practice. If it was indeed an accident, its a strange one, as it seemed out of place the moment it was reported. If it was the Kings thumbing their nose at the league, expressing frustration over the indefinite nature of the suspension, its strange timing because the league had alleviated the Kings salary cap situation by finally allowing Voynovs contract to be placed on Long-Term IR. Naturally, given the heightened awareness to domestic violence, anything surrounding Voynov wasnt going to sneak past anyone, so its hard to understand what exactly was happening here. OILERS HIT BOTTOM, AGAIN For as long as the Oilers winless streak continues -- and its up to 11 games -- there is the notion of impending doom around the Oilers, so there were lots of meetings following an overtime loss to Winnipeg Wednesday and trade rumours heated up, but there isnt an easy solution. Its hard to preach more patience, for a team that hasnt seen the playoffs since 2006 but, currently sitting in last, there just isnt an easy and immediate fix to their problems. Given that the playoffs are already out of reach, the Oilers really cant be facing any urgency to make moves. If a deal puts them in better position, long-term, then so be it, but there is no great incentive to get slightly better. RED WING RESURRECTED After two seasons marred by injury, it was getting to the point that no expectations could be placed on 31-year-old Red Wings forward Stephen Weiss. His contract, with a $4.9-million cap hit through 2018, seemed to be a millstone, one that could only be alleviated if Weiss was injured enough to be placed on the Long-Term Injured Reserve. With such low expectations on him, Weiss returned to the Detroit lineup on November 24, scoring a pair of goals. He has nine points (4 G, 5 A) in his past six games and is suddenly a contributor for Detroit. It may not last -- his percentages are sky-high -- but getting any kind of contribution from Weiss, even in a complementary role, is a major bonus for the Red Wings. TORONTO - Forgive Max Pentecost if his attentions divided this weekend. The Blue Jays second pick in the first round (11th overall) is competing in this weekends NCAA super regional for his school, Kennesaw State, against the Louisville Cardinals. All the while, he could be days or weeks away from signing a multi-million dollar contract to turn professional and enter Torontos organization. Pentecosts Owls were down a game in a best-of-three heading into action on Saturday night. Hes got business to take care of first but with a draft slot value at just under $2.9-million, the potential is there to strike it rich. Still, when you hear him speak in his southern drawl, its a reminder that the 21-year-old, like everyone his age, is in many ways still a kid. "I cant wait to get out there and go play," said Pentecost. "Theres going to be one day where Im going to have to clean out my locker and putter around home just because my parents had to move me out of my apartment while we were coming to the super regionals." Selected in the seventh round of the 2011 draft by the Texas Rangers, Pentecost chose not to sign when the Rangers included a 90-day clause in the contract offer, a shield against a recurring injury he suffered in high school. In Pentecosts sophomore year at Winder-Barrow High School near Atlanta, he suffered a stress fracture of his olecranon, which is the bony point of the elbow. He was prescribed rest and rehabilitation. It didnt work and the injury recurred during his junior year. Another season of rest and rehab didnt work and Pentecost suffered the injury a third time in his senior year. He had surgery, two screws were implanted, and there hasnt been an issue since. "I looked at it as I can go to college, work on a degree and if anything I can show them I can play three or four years without the injury recurring," said Pentecost. "I can play healthy and thankfully I was blessed enough to have a good career and improve my stock." His faith in himself has been rewarded. Pentecost has improved as a hitter in each of his three years at Kennesaw State, working a slash line of .423/.483/.631 this season. "I feel that Im more of a hit for average, Im more of a gap to gap, line drive kind of guy," said Pentecost. "I have power but Im not known as a power hitter. You know, it just kind of happens. I feel like I have pretty decent speed for baserunning, for stealing bags. I usually have a pretty good approach, hit offspeed well."Growing up in Georgia, Pentecost admitted he doesnt know much about the city of Toronto. He joked about his time in the Cape Cod League, the collegiate summer circuit in Massachusetts, where he picked up French-language radio stations beaming out of Quebec. It was his time in "The Cape," as its known, when he hit .346/.424/.538 with seven home runs for the Bourne Braves, that Pentecost feels he made his name. "I think thats the only reason I am where I am today," said Pentecost. "Going up there, nobody really knew who I was or had never even heard of Kennesaw State. So going up there I felt like I was really going to have to prove myself and prove my game just to prove who I am. I made a lot of changes to my game, really played hard, enjoyed it. The overall experience was, I mean, it was just a blast." Pentecost cites Jason Kendall and, more recently, Buster Posey as players hes looked up to. He considers himself a versatile athlete; if the catching thing doesnt work out, he could play a corner infield position or in the outfield. First things first, Pentecosts got a game to win on Saturday night. Hell worry about becoming a millionaire later, although getting the draft out of the way will help him relax. "Its a huge weight off my shoulders," he said. SANTOS UPDATE Sergio Santos will throw a bullpen session in Toronto on Sunday. If all goes well, hell report to Single-A Dunedin on Monday. The plan, Santos says, is to throw an inning each on Tuesday and Thursday. Hes hopeful of being activated off the disabled list late next week and of meeting the team in Baltimore. Air Max 270 React Noir Bleu Pas Cher .J. -- The New York Jets have promoted Tony Sparano Jr.OAKLAND, Calif. -- During a players meeting following the All-Star break, Jermaine ONeal promised his teammates to play the rest of the regular season like he would never play again -- because he very well might not. The 18-year NBA veteran has backed up his words more than anybody ever expected. ONeal had season highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds to carry the load for an undermanned frontcourt, and the Golden State Warriors held off the Brooklyn Nets 93-86 Saturday night for their third straight victory since the break. "Whatever I have, Im going to leave it on the able. Ive said that quite a few times, but Im dead serious," said the 36-year-old ONeal, who missed extensive time following surgery on his wrist earlier this season. "You may have to wheel me out of here at the end of the season, but thats what Im going to do." With Andrew Bogut sidelined with a left shoulder injury and David Lee out with a stomach flu, ONeal followed up his game-saving block that preserved Golden States overtime victory against Houston on Thursday night with a vintage performance. ONeal shot 10 for 13 from the floor, and Draymond Green scored a career-best 18 points to go with 10 rebounds starting in Lees place. Stephen Curry banked in a big 3-pointer in the final minute to finish with 17 points, and the Warriors won three games in a row for the first time since the Nets ended their 10-game winning streak on Jan. 8 in Brooklyn -- crediting ONeal for leading the way in the locker room and on the court. "Hes getting an opportunity to put a stamp on what he says," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "Its no longer what he says, its what hes doing." The veteran Nets never matched the intensity. Deron Williams had 20 points and six assists, and Joe Johnson scored 15 points for Brooklyn, which struggled to shoot from 3-point range and was just as careless passing. Brooklyn made just 2 of 21 attempts from beyond the arc and committed 16 turnovers. "I thought we had a lot of good shots, they just didnt fall," said Nets forward Paul Pierce, who scored 11 points on 3-for-11 shooting. "Sometimes you live by the 3, you die by the 3. We should attack more, especially with them limited in their big men." The Nets made sure the game moved at a plodding pace untill the final minutes.dddddddddddd Johnson made an 18-foot fadeaway to tie the score at 84 with 2:22 remaining. Green followed with two free throws, then Andray Blatche converted a tying layup. ONeal drew a foul on the other end and hit two free throws -- getting another chance after missing his second attempt because of a hitch in his release that drew a lane violation -- to give Golden State an 88-86 lead. On Brooklyns next possession, Johnsons pass was deflected before hitting Williams hands and landing out of bounds. Curry quickly came back by banking in a 3-pointer to put the Warriors up 91-86 with 37 seconds remaining and put the game out of reach. The win moved the Warriors (34-22) a season-high 12 games over .500. They begin a six-game road trip -- all against Eastern Conference opponents -- at Detroit on Monday. Golden States smaller lineup gave the Nets fits from the start. Curry hit two 3-pointers during an 18-6 run to open the game. Brooklyns slow start compounded when Shaun Livingston left in the first quarter with a bruised tailbone after falling hard when he was fouled by Harrison Barnes going for a layup. The team said X-rays on Livingston were negative. Just like they did in Brooklyn, though, the Nets rallied from an early deficit against Golden States second unit. Brooklyn took the lead for the first time when Williams started a three-point play on a layup over Andre Iguodala, putting the Nets up 46-44 late in the second quarter. They never led again. "Even though we didnt shoot the ball extremely well from behind the arc, it was a game until the last minute," Nets coach Jason Kidd said. "On the road against a team like Golden State, thats all you can ask for." NOTES: Green said he was in an accident driving to the game, but that no one was injured. ... Nets G Marcus Thornton sat out with a stomach illness. He has yet to play since being traded from Sacramento on Wednesday for Jason Terry and Reggie Evans. ... Warriors coach Mark Jackson said Bogut, who missed his seventh straight game because of an ailing left shoulder, will likely return at some point during the Warriors six-game road trip. ... The Warriors signed C Hilton Armstrong to a 10-day contract, calling him from the teams NBA Development League affiliate in Santa Cruz. ' ' '

When speaking with Mauro Biello shortly after the clubs 1-1 tie in Philadelphia on March 29, the Impact assistant looked at the result as a point gained and not a case of another two lost. The same cant be said of last Saturdays 2-2 draw at Olympic Stadium against a very weakened New York Red Bulls side and one which had three stalwarts in Henry, Cahill and Olave back home in Harrison, NJ. With confidence and belief at the lowest of ebbs with barely five minutes on the board the Impact could not have asked for the better start as Felipe threaded the ball perfectly into the space Romero was running into. You could almost feel the relief on the Impact bench as Romero intricately placed his shot just inside the far post. Dominating the possession early on and carving out opportunity seemingly with ease - this was a Red Bulls team that was certainly there for the taking. However, come the final whistle, the post-match discussion yet again was dominated by the Impacts inability to defend effectively. It is the basic and elementary aspects of the craft which have been their unravelling. We saw glimpses of this through the pre-season and alarmingly the trend has been allowed to continue as the season has progressed. How much longer the team can afford to set themselves up in a loose fitting 4-2-3-1 system remains to be seen. Saturday afternoon at Olympic Stadium, and just like 2012s maiden MLS season, the Impact will go into a sixth match of the season still in search of their first victory of the season. With this as the backdrop a match against the Chicago Fire could not have come at a worse time for Frank Klopas as his old club come into Montreal in search of its initial victory this term too. His successor at the Fire - Frank Yallop - spoke in glowing terms during the week about the man he replaced. "I know Frank well, playing against him, coaching against him and socially. Hes a good guy." Klopass Chicago football roots go all the way back to 1983 when he played with the NASLs Chicago Sting. It was during this time Klopas got to visit, and play in Montreal. A city he continued to visit through intervening years during Christmas shopping trips with his wife. Familiarity with Montreal also extends itself through Fire ownership. Club president Andrew Hauptman is married to Charles Bronfmans daughter Ellen. The original Expos owner was special guest of honour at Olympic Stadium when the Impact played the Fire in front of close to 59,000 during the clubs home debut in MLS back on Mar. 17, 2012. With the Impact buoyed McInerneys paperwork has now been sorted out the Fire counter this with news Mike Magee has signed a new deal. Reports yesterday indicated that the league MVP and Golden Boot recipient native had doubled his salary. News coming on the very same day the MLS Players Union released 2014 salary figures. Magee missed the two opening games of the season due to a hamstring recurrence. But just like Marco Di Vaio before him, opened his 2014 account against the Philadelphia Union when the 29-year old Chicago native opened the scoring in last Saturdays 2-2 draw at Toyota Park. Impact players and coaches this week appeared to sound a collective sigh of relief now McInerey had joined their ranks. Di Vaio going as far to say he had the soccer goods that would not look out of order in Europe. Klopas didnt hesitate when asked if the two could play together. Lets see, and in what context. Someone likely missing from the starting XI will be Hernan Bernadello - who was substituted late on against the Red Bulls after landing awkwardly. The 27-year old made his club debut against the Fire last August but due to an ankle injury only managed to feature in eight matches in 2013. Bernier who didnt look at all out of sorts when he came on to replace the DP likely could be inserted into tomorrows line up. The club captain played and scored during the Impacts reserve team outing at Olympic Stadium last Sunday. Tomorrow at Olympic Stadium the Impact go into the match on the back of a solitary victory in their last 13 league matches. Patience will be worn mighty thin though if come 6pm Saturday that number extends itself to 14. It would most certainly sour the planned chance for the two Franks to share a post-game bottle of wine. Ominously on the two previous occasions, the Chicago Fire has played against a former coach they have come out on the winning side each time. Both wins secured on the road. A better question yet may be this: How many times has the same player been involved in both? It wasnt just the medal count that was impressive, but the manner in which our Canadian men and women carried themselves on the World stage. Canadians proved once again that when they have the support they need, they can compete with any country in the world. And a very special thanks to our mens and womens hockey teams. They are the two teams that every four years seem to have more pressure on them to perform than any team in the history of sport. One observation before we get to football. Im not a hockey analyst, but Im a hockey fan, and fan of watching excellence, and it is very impressive to watch head coach Mike Babcock in action. Two things stood out while watching Babcock bring a group of superstars together. First, at about the midway point of the tourney, Babcock was asked why Sidney Crosby wasnt scoring. His reply: "everyone evaluates Sid on scoring, and I evaluate Sid on winning." He went on to suggest that Canadas lack of scoring shouldnt be judged as a poor offensive effort. "Dont get confused, we outchanced these teams big-time; we didnt score. We were a great offensive team. Thats how we coached." Babcock had asked this group of talented players to check their egos at the door and play a well rounded team game, and they complied. Proof of that was after the Gold Medal game, when Jonathan Toews was asked about the teams low offensive output in the tourney, and Toews answer suggested that at any time anyone on the Team Canada roster could have become more creative offensively and tried to put up big points, but that wasnt the plan and this team was going to stick to the plan. Yes, there were some close games including the 1-0 win against the Americans, but in the end Babcocks plan was bang on, and clearly not one player on Canadas roster was confused. Great stuff! Now to football, where one story has been in the shadows while we watched the Olympics. It involves the leagues newest team, the Ottawa Redblacks, and their quarterback situation. Lets hit the refresh button on the computer for a second. Just prior to the start of the Olympics, the Redblacks signed Henry Burris, and named him the starter at the press conference. This occurred not long after the expansion draft where Ottawa GM Marcel Desjardins chose Kevin Glenn from the Calgary Stampeders. In a conference call after the draft Glenn talked about how excited he was to have his own team to lead in the 2014 season. Then after the Burris announcement, Glenn had a bit of a Twitter issue where it looked like he was trying to direct message a couple of other players and accidentally sent a comment to the masses that wasnt exactly a ringing endorsement for the organization. Now Glenn claimed he was hacked, and maybe he was, but it doesnt change the fact that there could be a quarterback controversy brewing in the Nations Capital before they even take their first offensive snap. In a brief chat with Desjardins at the CFL Congress, the Ottawa GM indicated that he would listen to all trade offers of course, but would like to go to camp with all the QBs he currently has on his roster. However, will that be easier said than done? Glenn turned down my request to an interview for this story, as I tried to gauge where he is at mentally with regards to all that has developed in Ottawa. Now I respect Glenns choice to avoid hhaving to comment on the situation, but it does force us to speculate.dddddddddddd Does Glenn not want to talk publicly right now because he has nothing positive or constructive to say about the situation? Or is he declining interviews because he doesnt think there is anything to this story and that he is perfectly comfortable going to camp as the back-up to Burris? I know where my vote would go, but again it is only speculation. There are a few teams that could benefit from the addition of Kevin Glenn, and at the top of that list is the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Bombers have been searching for stability at QB for years now, and if they could somehow swing a trade with Ottawa, they would finally have it. In fact with Drew Willy getting his shot for the Bombers this year, acquiring Glenn would create a situation similar to what we have watched in Calgary the last couple of years. The Stamps have felt the future is Drew Tate (and now possibly Bo Levi Mitchell) and over the last two years had Glenn as the best insurance policy in the game. Willy with the veteran Glenn behind him is the same scenario and all of a sudden would give the Bombers a real chance to turn things around. Then again, how will Glenn feel about backing up Willy? Glenns situation is another example of the cliché that you hear from general managers all the time. "It is a great game but a terrible business." You cant fault Desjardins and head coach Rick Campbell for trying to acquire the best talent possible and create competition in camp. On the other hand, it is impossible to not feel for Kevin Glenn who just doesnt ever seem to be able to shake that back-up label, despite leading the Stamps to a West Final and a Grey Cup over the last two seasons. Also it is not that much of a stretch to suggest that the team that is able to acquire Glenn will become the best team in the league at the most important position on the field. Pick a team: BC, Travis Lulay and Kevin Glenn, not bad especially since Lulay is coming off another shoulder injury. Edmonton, Mike Rielly, Glenn and Matt Nichols. Reilly was very good last year and will be better, Nichols is working his way back from injury, Glenn gives them stability. Saskatchewan, Darian Durant and Glenn, tough to beat that experience. Toronto, Ricky Ray and Glenn, working in Scott Milanovichs offensive system, yikes! Montreal, the young Troy Smith learning from the veteran Glenn in meetings and on the practice field. I have left out Calgary and Hamilton because Glenn returning to either of those teams seems like a longer shot, however its not out of the realm of possibility, and both those teams would improve their chances of winning by adding Glenn. Which camp Kevin Glenn attends is a question that may not be answered for a while as teams sort through their rosters. However, it is a story I wanted to wedge in between the Olympics and the NHL trade deadline and one to watch as the off-season continues. In the meantime we can continue to speculate as to whether or not Glenn is angry with Ottawa and wants out, or is content to be the back-up to Burris and just doesnt want to talk about it. If the situation becomes confusing for Glenn or the brass in Ottawa they can refer back to Team Canadas Babcock and what he was able to do with that group of superstar hockey players. "Everyone evaluates Sid on scoring, and I evaluate Sid on winning." Dont get confused. ' ' '

Every night of the Stanley Cup playoffs, TSN hockey analyst and former NHL goaltender Jamie McLennan breaks down each goalies performance. Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Steve Mason, Philadelphia (4) - Mason was brilliant all night long with save after big save on Benoit Pouliot, Carl Hagelin and Derick Brassard. He was the difference in the game for Philly. They were good tonight as a team, but the Flyers still gave up chances and had breakdowns and thats where Mason came in. He showed elite puck-handling, as well, in this game and was a big reason that they did not spend extended lengths in their own zone. Henrik Lundqvist, New York (2) - Lundqvist didnt really get a ton of help tonight. He made a few big saves on Wayne Simmonds early on, as well as Brayden Schenn and Scott Hartnell, but was eaten up by Simmonds over the game and was mercifully pulled after two. That was the right call by Alain Vigneault, as the focus would be to get him ready for Game 7 on Wednesday. Cam Talbot, New York (N/R) - He was on mop-up duty and not tested much.
